Cover on the Way!

Friends,

An exciting time in writing is coming up, starting with yet another new week full of opportunities and chances to accomplish your goals! I say an exciting time is approaching because, at least in my writing life, more progress is being made on my third book, Imminent!

The Faces of the War Collection

I ended up not getting the next draft of the cover this past Friday, so I anticipate receiving it by later today or tomorrow (hopefully not Wednesday). It’s crazy to see how this cover has evolved from the vision I had initially. But like I’ve said before, having a finished product end up not quite how you first envisioned it ins’t a bad thing!

With having the day off today, I hope to knock out at least 3,000 words, if not more. If I can manage that, it’ll put me under the 10,000 word mark for words remaining! My target date for completing the first draft is September 21, so I’m really trying to work productively and effectively toward that end. September is just a week away, so like I said – these next few months are about to get crazy!

That’s the main piece of information that I wanted to keep you updated on this week, so this blog post will be shorter than usual. But I like to change it up a little sometimes, and that also means that there will be more information in the next couple of posts.

Thank you for reading this post and for supporting me and taking interest in my work. I write because I enjoy it and have a passion for it, and I hope that what I write can entertain you, my readers! Feel free to check out my currently published books (Resistant and Unguarded, and my short story volume), and follow my blog to stay in the loop with upcoming project details. Another great way to stay in contact with me and my work is to join my mailing list by subscribing. And yet another way to connect with me is through my YouTube channel, where I upload weekly vlogs that detail my writing and personal life.

I look forward to connecting with you, whether you’re new to my work or have been following for a while!

Until next time,

-Eli

Newsletter Update (and Other Things)

Friends,

I hope this week brings you happiness in life, success in work, and peace in your heart and mind! I have a couple of things to cover today, so let’s get down to it…

Mailing List

As I wrap up a year of mailing list newsletters, and considering what’s going on in my life, I have decided to send a newsletter out every three weeks instead of every two. At this point in my writing life, there just isn’t enough new content every time for each newsletter to be fresh. In addition, it takes away time that I could use to write more. So this week there will be a newsletter sent out to those on my mailing list (and anyone else who’d like to subscribe to it in the meantime); the next newsletter will be sent out sometime around Wednesday, August 26th. I believe this is a wise move in my writing life, so I thank you for your understanding and I encourage you to join my mailing list!

The Faces of the War Collection

The process has been a little slower than anticipated in relation to getting my next book cover designed. However, as my wife reassures me, I shouldn’t worry about it right now because the book isn’t finished. With that being said, please know that I am working on this project a little at a time, and am eagerly anticipating its release. As I’ve said before, sometimes a working timeline doesn’t pan out exactly how you plan it; that’s how it usually is in the world of education, so I’m used to it and I know how to handle it.

In the meantime, if you’d like to check out my first two books, you can find them in print and on the Kindle here (Resistant) and here (Unguarded). Keep in mind that they’re not related stories, so you don’t have to read one to understand the other!

YouTube

I am excited to see that I’m slowly gaining followers on my YouTube channel! I would like to gather more people who are interested in reading, writing, history, and life in general, so if you have family, friends, coworkers, or anyone else you know that shares those interests, please send them my way. My vlogs are usually between 8-15 minutes, depending on the topics I discuss, so they can easily be watched in the morning before work, on a lazy Saturday, or even at night before bed. And I only upload one video per week, so you don’t have to worry about watching a whole bunch of videos to stay up-to-date with what I’m doing. Many thanks in advance!

That’s about it for now, but like I said – hopefully over the next few weeks things will develop more as writing continues and as my book cover gets closer to completion. Come back next week for more, and I hope to see you on my mailing list!

Until next time,

-Eli

Imminent Cover & Other News

Friends,

It is a new week, and thus a new chance to accomplish your goals. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm,” so get out there and tackle your goals and dreams with purpose! I have a few things for you today, so let’s get down to business…

The Faces of the War Collection

I am just about ready to submit my cover ideas for Imminent (my third and upcoming book) to my cover designer, so you should expect a reveal sometime in the next month or so, barring any impediments along the way. I am debating whether or not to include the story description/synopsis with the cover. I didn’t do that with either of my first two books, but maybe I should change it up for this one. What do you think? As for the writing, I have today off from both jobs, so I intend on getting work done.

*cue thinking out loud (…or on the page…)

I have given some thought as to how the writing of this book has gone thus far, and that it has been drastically different than the previous two books. Part of that reason, I think, is because I’ve started another job. The time that I had free before to write is now mostly taken up by this second job, therefore leaving me with less time to write for extended periods of time. This change in circumstance is slowly forcing me to change my writing methodology, going from writing for a few hours on days off to writing in smaller increments every day. Only time will tell whether I can write effectively this way, or if I must search for a new writing method.

With that being said, I also think some of the issue of my lack of writing is the fact that in my mind I’m still trying to make the late summer deadline to release the book. In reality, though, I’m coming to realize that’s not possible. So, my plan is to rethink the book’s release and aim for that new deadline. I don’t know for sure what that is yet, but when I do I will inform you! After all, you are the reason I write, so it is right that you be the first to know.

If this is your first time reading my blog and you’d like to check out my first two WWII historical fiction books, you can find them here (Resistant) and here (Unguarded).

YouTube

I am continuing to improve my recording habits throughout the week so I can upload good videos to my channel every Friday. “Good” in the sense that they give you a nice look into my life, both the personal and writing aspects of it. I’m not out to impress anybody, nor to suggest that what I say about writing is definitive or “right.” I simply like to talk about reading and writing as I experience it and as I understand it, which is the most anyone can expect of a person in my position, I think.

For the time being, I record footage throughout the week and post a video on Friday. In the future, though, I see myself putting up 2 or even 3 videos a week. I’d like to think that I could gain a following that enjoys watching me and hearing what I have to say about the things I discuss in my vlogs, and that those people would support me in making more than one video a week. But I won’t rush things – it’ll happen when it happens!

Other News

In an effort to vary up the content I put out to my readers and followers, I am taking some time to unofficially poll my readers. What do you want to know about me? What would you like me to discuss on my blog, vlogs, or newsletters? Is there something different I can be doing to better interact with you?

I’d really like to connect with those who read and follow my work, because that’s the reason I write. Well, I also write because I enjoy doing it for me, but you know what I mean! So please, communicate with me your thoughts and questions. I’d really like to hear from you.

That’s all I have for you today, but I’m sure more will unfold as the coming weeks come and go. I’m really looking forward to getting the cover back from my designer and revealing it to you. I’m even more excited to finish writing Imminent and publishing it for your reading pleasure. Just bear with me and it’ll be here before we know it!

Until next time,

-Eli

“This Is Sparta!”

Friends,

Welcome to yet another week – another opportunity – to achieve greatness. In the words of Leonidas, “Prepare for glory!” Let’s get into today’s content…

The Faces of the War Collection

Toward the end of last week, I came across some things I had jotted down while doing the skeleton planning for Book Three, and it got me thinking. After some careful consideration of historical facts and other things I had discovered in my research, I decided that it was best to revamp some of the planning I had done and change up the story outline just a bit. Now that that is done, I can move forward with more confidence that what I’ll be writing will be more realistic in appeal and closer along the lines of what actually could’ve happened.

That’s part of the trick with writing historical fiction: everything little event that occurred in the past doesn’t have a personal account to go with it. That’s just a fact historical writers must deal with. So when writing, the gaps in what could have happened are filled with the writer’s creativity fueled by contextual knowledge. In other words, the writer creates an event in the story that contains people, actions, and so on that could have existed at the time.

That’s what I do with my stories when there isn’t much substance to certain things I want to put into my story. With Resistant and Unguarded, my first two books, this method of writing was executed fairly well I think. In my third book, I am currently expanding and experimenting with this method in the second half of the manuscript, and I must say that it’s a fun thing to do. And I think that’s part of what writing should be about – experimenting and trying new things to see how far you can take yourself in your work. I should add that the developments in the story with which I’m experimenting are rather bold, mostly because the events that are taking place very well could have happened and it’s very hard to tell either way.

The word count is approaching 25K in Book Three and I’m about to send the word to my cover designer to get things rolling. As of now, I’m resetting the tentative release date for mid- to late-September. I’ll be writing as much as I can throughout the rest of the summer, and hopefully I’ll be able to produce a quality book to add to the first two.

YouTube

If you haven’t seen my videos on my writing process, you can easily find them on my channel. Since finishing my writing process videos, I’ve switched gears and am now doing weekly vlogs by recording footage throughout the week and posting a video on Friday.

Please subscribe to my channel and join me on my journey through both my personal and writing lives. And if you have family or friends who might be interested in me and my work, please pass the word along. I enjoy getting to meet new people!

And if you want to go a step further and get more out of the content I produce, you can join my mailing list by clicking this link and filling in the information. I send out a newsletter vie email every couple of weeks, and it includes details about my projects, fun facts, Q&A posts, and much more. It’s easy to do and fun to be a part of!

Other News

I have hinted before that there are other projects on my plate behind the scenes, but I haven’t really elaborated on that point. I’m not going to right now, either (sorry), but I will tell you that a pretty cool thing is in the works and in the coming weeks I’ll share with you about it.

That’s just about all I have for right now in terms of news. Thank you for your interest in my work and for following my blog. I truly appreciate it!

Until next time,

-Eli

Back to Writing

Friends,

It is a new week, which means a new blog post and another chance to conquer our fears and accomplish our dreams! Let’s get started…

The Faces of the War Collection

After taking a week for vacation and using last week to catch up on some housekeeping items, it’s time to resume writing Book Three. Like I’ve said in my writing process videos on my YouTube channel, it’s good to take a break between your writing. In this case, I took a break between two parts in my book rather than after completing an entire draft, and this break just so happened to be two weeks. However it’s done, it’s good for your mind to take a break in this regard.

With roughly 26K words remaining until my word count goal is met, Parts II and III have plenty of space to develop into something great…or at least that’s my hope! This book will be a little different in regards to time covered in the story. In Resistant, the story spanned almost the length of the entire war. In Unguarded, the entire war wasn’t spanned, but there was still some significant time that passed between parts of the story. In the case of Book Three, it will be even more so.

I should be speaking with my contact in Colorado who works with my cover designer, so you should be hearing more about that over the coming weeks. I’m excited to see how this one turns out!

The Short Story Collection

I haven’t touched on this project in a while, so I figured I should address it. Through the course of April and into May, I decided to postpone the publication of my next short story ebook, Volume 2, until at least after I complete Book Three in my WWII collection. Part of it was because I wanted to put my focus on that project, and another part was that my beta reader suggested some changes that would lengthen and deepen one of the stories, so I wanted to be sure to give ample time to make that story into something awesome. So for the time being, please check out my first ebook (Volume 1) on Amazon for $0.99, and keep an eye out in the fall for news about Volume 2!

YouTube

I am now in my second week of vlogging since the completion of my writing process videos! If you’re not subscribed to my channel or haven’t yet checked out my latest vlog, you can watch it here. If you like it, please give it a Thumbs Up and subscribe to catch the next one!

I have some other projects in the works, of both writing and non-writing types, but I’ll give more information regarding those projects down the road. I have to keep you interested somehow, right?!

Thank you very much for reading today’s post, and for following, supporting, and encouraging me as I pursue my passion. Word of mouth is a powerful thing, and that’s one very strong way to help me get that passion “out there” to the world. So please, tell a friend, family member, or coworker about me and my work…because you never know if someone you know could take an interest in what I do!

Until next time,

-Eli

Book Three Is Coming Along!

Friends,

It’s a new week, and that means that we have another opportunity to achieve success, to tackle our goals, and to accomplish the task at hand! Join me for today’s content…

The Faces of the War Collection

I have made some good headway this past week on my third book, with the word count coming in at over 19K words. In the spirit of tackling our goals, mine for this week include completing Part I and beginning tending to a few details in the text by Friday. It should only be a day’s work (or two) because I should need less than 1,000 words to finish what needs to be said in the book’s first act.

When I return after some time away from work, I plan to move forward with writing Part II. The planning is done for the most part, but I feel I’ll need to get some more details ironed out in order to smoothly write the rest of the book. But even with that still on my plate, I am confident that the story can be completed by the end of the summer. However, it’s always wise to keep an open mind, especially when it comes to publication timelines.

If you haven’t checked out my first two books, Resistant and Unguarded, then I encourage you to do so!

YouTube

We are in the final week of my videos on writing process, with the videos being posted this coming Friday as usual. There will be two videos because they each cover the same topic but relate to different media of publication. By this, I mean that I’ll touch on bringing your book to market via Kindle Direct Publishing and Createspace (Kindle and print, respectively).

If you haven’t checked out my channel, I encourage you to do so. After my writing process videos are complete, I’ll post more personal, writing life videos with tips, tricks, and other writing-related topics included. Come along for the ride, and be sure to click the Thumbs Up and Subscribe buttons too!

GoFundMe Campaign

I am still raising funds to support the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. Raising money for an organization has been something I’ve wanted to do for some time, and this is what I’ve chosen as my first philanthropic project. So please, consider joining me in my effort to maintain history for future generations!

In other news, I recently got hired into a second job that is starting out as part-time, but has the potential to turn into full-time. This may sound counterintuitive in terms of writing productivity, but it is an answered prayer in my person life. This will give me more stability and more time with my wife. Rest assured, my writing will continue!

Also, I’ll be taking next week off from my blog posts and newsletter. However, upon my return from vacation I’ll have details and information for you in blog, vlog, and newsletter…so be sure to keep an eye out for those!

If you are reading this and you are new to my work, please feel free to check out the projects on my website and to contact me if you want to chat!

Until next time,

-Eli

Summer Plans

Friends,

It is another week – one that I hope is filled with goals and aspirations for you, both personally and professionally! Let’s get right down to business…

The Faces of the War Collection

First of all, I apologize for not informing you via the blog post last week that my first two books were discounted on Amazon. I had a lot on my mind and much was going on for me personally that day, but that’s no excuse. As a writer and self-promoter, I should have been more on top of that, and I wasn’t. So to compensate for it, I will plan to make these two books, Resistant and Unguarded, free for a time during the launch week of my third and upcoming book. I hope to release it in the late summer or early fall, depending on its publication progress.

As for those details, I had to switch some story details around, which put me back in my writing just a tad this week. But that’s part of the process – researching and getting the details done accurately. I’m closing in on the completion of Part I (there are usually three Parts to my books, if you’re new to my work), after which I plan to continue right along with Part II. My original plan was to switch projects and work a little on my short stories while Part I was being beta read, but priorities have changed for me at this point. I want to complete this book first before changing projects.

To help get feedback on my projects, I’m always open to working with people who enjoy reading, and who would like to be beta readers for me. We can discuss compensation if you’re interested, and if so, please contact me at the email found on my Contact page.

The Short Story Collection

As you just read above, I’ve decided to put this project on hold for the time being. I hope to get some more feedback on the story I’ve completed in order to really fine tune it. That will happen in time…just not right now.

YouTube

I am nearing the end of my series on my writing process. Since I’ll be on a brief anniversary trip at the end of the month, I figured I’d treat that as a dividing point between YouTube mini projects. With that being said, I’ll upload three more videos over the next two weeks, then take that Friday off while on vacation.

Upon my return, I’ll treat my weekly vlogs as simply that: video logs of what I do throughout the week without really having a scripted structure like for the writing process videos. I’d like to include footage of our time on vacation (location to be disclosed later), but we’ll see what happens.

If you haven’t yet seen my videos or subscribed to my channel, you can find my content here.

That’s all I have for today. As always, I thank you for your following, and for the support and encouragement you give me. It helps doing what I do go over so much better, believe me!

Until next time,

-Eli

Dayton Book Expo & U.S. Air Force Museum

Friends,

Welcome to a new post, a new week, and a new chance to achieve greatness! Let’s get into today’s content…

Dayton Book Expo

This past weekend, I attended the Dayton Book Expo at the David H. Ponitz Conference Center at Sinclair Community College. There were over 90 other authors, some of which were sponsored by the Dayton Metro Library. Prizes and awards were handed out throughout the day, and there was an award at the end given to the author with the highest sales that day. It was populated by many readers, some local and some from out of town. Overall, it was a good experience!

IMG_1713

My table at the Expo, with all of my tabletop material set up

Though I can’t put a number on it, I had many people – readers and authors – visit my table. It was great to chat with others about my writing story, my work, and what I’m planning for the future. Most of the slots on the free ebook signup sheets were filled, and many people wanted to be added to my mailing list. If you haven’t done that yourself, you can easily join the group here.

IMG_1719

Resistant and Unguarded for sale

In terms of books sold, that number was 3. Bright side: both of my books will be in a library in Michigan, available to be read by countless high school students. I also gave away many business cards, so hopefully I’ll be contacted in the near future for networking and/or collaboration. It’s a start, at least, and that’s how you’ve gotta make your way sometimes.

IMG_1717

My short story volume covers

Plans have already been started for next year’s expo, but I’ll wait until closer to then before deciding on returning. I’d like to attend other expos to see what else is out there; I simply treated Dayton as a test expo to get the basic gist of things. We’ll just have to see what time brings!

National Museum of the U.S. Air Force

On Sunday, my wife and I visited the Air Force museum in Dayton, and let me tell you – it was great! It’s crazy to think that all of the planes there had seen action in wartime, and it’s even crazier that they survived to be showcased as pieces of history. And what made it even more special for me was that I got to see many planes from the World War II era, which greatly interests me.

IMG_1733

While there are far too many pictures to show here, know that I did see the plane that is featured in my second book, Unguarded. It is the Supermarine Spitfire, the primary fighter plane used by the RAF during the Battle of Britain. Though it has the emblem of the US Air Force – because U.S. airmen did fly it at one point – it’s the same version of fighter plane the British used…

IMG_1777

Supermarine Spitfire Mk. Vc

I am so glad I got to visit the museum and see these pieces of history, and know that they were used to bring the war to an end. More pictures will make their way onto my social media and website over the coming weeks and months, but I think this will do for now. In addition to these pictures, I’ll have footage of my visit in this week’s vlog, so subscribe to my YouTube channel to catch that video!

The Faces of the War Collection

Progress is being made on this front, with the total word count approaching the 15K word mark. I plan to tackle more writing this week in great amounts, so my hope is that I’ll exceed the 20K by the beginning of next week. Work will soon begin on the book cover, I hope, so I will let you know of those details when the time comes.

The Short Story Collection

Progress has slowed a bit on this project, but I still am shooting for a summer release. Keep an eye out for details about Volume 2 as the summer months approach. And if you haven’t checked out Volume 1 yet, you can find it here.

As for other news, I am still keeping up with my YouTube vlogs, with the next video going live this Friday. I’m also keeping the GoFundMe campaign open to receive donations for the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. As for personal things, I am on the lookout for a new, full-time job. I’m hoping these next couple of months will bring some change in my life, and that I’ll be able to accomplish the writing that I want to get done.

As always, thank you for your encouragement and support. I truly appreciate it!

Until next time,

-Eli

Movin’ Right Along

Friends,

A new week has arrived, bringing to us more opportunities to accomplish our goals! Let’s delve into today’s material…

The Short Story Collection

Last week, I mentioned that I was on pace to complete my next short story ebook, Volume 2, by the end of the month. I really wanted to reach that goal so that I could focus on my next WWII book for a few months. However, upon receiving feedback from my beta reader, it is clear to me that I should spend some extra time on one story in particular. This means that I won’t be releasing a new ebook in the spring, at least not by May 1. But that’s okay – I’m excited to see how the stories develop and where they take me this time around. And who knows…maybe putting in a little more time than usual might make the stories really good. Time will tell!

If you would like to check out my first short story ebook, Volume 1, you can find it here.

The Faces of the War Collection

Since the beginning of the month, writing has slowed a bit on Book Three. As is usually the case, life simply happens and thus pushes concentrated writing down the priority list, as well as decreases the amount of time in which to do it. However, I am convinced that the overall pace of this book is still very much on schedule for my intended release, but those details won’t be revealed yet for another few months.

If you’re interested in checking out my first two books set during the Second World War, you can find them here: Resistant and Unguarded.

YouTube

Videos about my writing process are slowly making progress on my channel. I currently have seven videos posted on the topic, with eight more to go! If you haven’t yet checked them out, I encourage you to do so. And while you’re at it, be sure to click those “Subscribe” and “Thumbs Up” buttons. It’ll really help me out!

Dayton Book Expo

The Expo is fast approaching, and I have most of my tabletop material together and ready. I am very excited to see how it goes and who I meet. This is a big step for me in my writing life, and I’m glad I have the opportunity to do it! Also, I plan on vlogging while I’m there, so keep an eye out for that video!

National WWII Museum

I am raising funds via GoFundMe to support the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. I am doing this because I want to take part in maintaining history, especially that of a time period of which I am so attached and by which I am so intrigued. If you have it in your heart to donate in support of this campaign, I implore you to check out the campaign website and consider donating. Every little bit helps!

Thank you all so much for your support and encouragement of my writing passion. Without you behind me, this would be a whole lot harder!

Until next time,

-Eli

Come On Over!

Friends,

Welcome to a new post and a new week! My hope is that you set out today to accomplish something on your To-Do list, and that you set out with a positive attitude. Now, let’s get down to business…

The Faces of the War Collection

I will resume writing on Book Three today, after this post goes live, and hope to get into another rhythm throughout the rest of this week. I am only about 5,000 words away from finishing Part I, so I’d really like to hit the writing hard this week to reach that mark. I am still very excited to see what this writing experience brings me and where this story will take me!

In other Faces news, Resistant and Unguarded are selling consistently…slow, but consistently. I have been told that Unguarded is a much better book in terms of writing improvement, so I encourage you to check it out! You can find the Amazon sales page here. You can also find the sales page for Resistant here, if you’re interested.

Dayton Book Expo

Speaking of my first two books, I will have hard copies (paperback format) available for sale at my Expo table. There will also be an email signup list for those interested in joining my mailing list, as well as for a FREE ebook copy of one of my books. There is a limited number of spaces to sign up, so once they’re filled, that’s it! So if you’re coming to the Expo on April 25th, be sure to stop by my table for a chance at a FREE book and to chat with me.

The Short Story Collection

I am currently in the process of awaiting feedback from beta readers on my upcoming release Volume 2. If all goes as planned, the ebook will release by the end of the month. However, sometimes things happen so it’s wise to take that into account. I will continue to update you with release details as the time nears.

If you want to check out my first ebook, Volume 1, you can do so here.

GoFundMe Campaign

I am really looking forward to the initial donation to my campaign! Money donated will support the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. I am looking to help make a difference in the world of history by helping to maintain a part of it, and your donations will help! So please, consider it and consider telling a friend about it. Every little bit helps!

YouTube

My videos are slowly but surely gaining more exposure in the YouTube world, and hopefully in the writing world as well! If you haven’t yet seen my videos, you can find all of them on my channel here. My most recent video on writing process can be found here. I will continue to produce these videos, because I have developed a passion for it and it also is something that I think can help expand my author platform.

That’s about it for news on all fronts, but things are always changing and improving. So I will keep you in the loop! BUT – I can do that way better if you join my mailing list, where I divulge more details and reveal more information than here in the blog posts. So come on over!

Until next time,

-Eli
